This is one of the first grooves I learnt on drum set.
I have met drummers from across Africa who recognize this rhythm and have a name in their language for this rhythm. This rhythm is based on the 6/8 African pulse/clave.
The improv is an example in opening up the rhythm in any direction once the fundamentals of the rhythm are internalized.
