Vintage Meinl Dragon 20" China Ride, weighing 2180 grams, from Meinl's short-lived professional Dragon series of the 1980s.
Introduced in 1984, the Dragon series was one of Meinl's early professional cymbal lines and was produced for only a relatively brief period before being discontinued in 1989. Dragon cymbals were made from B20 bronze in Wuhan, China and subsequently finished by Meinl in Germany. Cymbal
This is the dedicated 20" China Ride, an unusual hybrid design intended to combine the dark, trashy character of a traditional Chinese cymbal with enough definition and weight to function as a ride. At 2180g, this example has substantial body while retaining the complex response associated with the heavily hand-hammered Dragon series.
This example carries the later-style Dragon markings without the earlier “Profile” designation and is marked West Germany.
The cymbal features extremely extensive irregular hammering across virtually the entire surface, fine traditional lathing, and the distinctive red Meinl/Dragon graphics.
